 This year Madikela Tours www.madikelatours.com  is embarking on a fundraising and awareness campaign placing the focus on the ongoing problem South Africa and our neighbouring countries are experiencing regarding the slaughtering of Rhinos for their precious horn.

 Combining Rhino awareness with fitness awareness to promote a healthier lifestyle, we decided to participate in a number of outdoor activities including the various warrior races www.warrior.co.za around the country as well as the jump city challenge www.jumpcitychallenge.com  

 "run4rhinos” was born and this includes 6 participants (not always the same people), representing Madikela Tours at these events. The aim is to raise funds through donations from supporters of the cause to be able to book a table or two… at the Fundraiser Gala Banquet. The funds raised from donations received to book the table(s) will go to the Rhino trust www.rhinotrust.org

          RHINO POACHING IN SOUTH AFRICA

•  South Africa has the largest Rhino population in the world
• In 2014, there were 1215 Rhino’s killed in SA
• Up to now, another 1023 Rhino’s have already been killed for their horns.
• The poaching is driven by the illegal trade in Rhino horn, with a growing demand from Asian countries like Vietnam and China.  Vietnam being the largest user.
• Consumers use it to treat a variety of conditions, from cancer to hangovers and it is also believed to have special aphrodisiac powers.  None of these have been scientifically proven.
• Due to its high value, it is also used as a status symbol by wealthy individuals
• Because of the high price fetched for Rhino horn, criminal syndicates are involved using state of the art equipment to track down and kill the Rhino’s.
• At the end of 2015, a High court ruling has lifted the ban on the domestic trade in Rhino horn, but the Department of Environmental Affairs is opposing this ruling and awaiting leave to appeal
• Prior to the moratorium in 2009, an estimated 100 Rhino’s were poached annually.  Since the ban was invoked, more than 5000 Rhino’s have been poached for their horns in South Africa.
• If the poaching continues at the current rate, Rhino deaths will overtake Rhino births in 2016 – 2018, driving the species to extinction.
• Government is trying to combat the poaching crisis through a number of initiatives such as anti-poaching and monitoring patrols, community conservation, captive breeding, translocations and demand reduction projects (education) in Asia.
